Flooring calculator

Rooms are not clean multiples of a box. You need square footage after waste, then boxes from the carton coverage printed on the SKU you are actually buying. Enter length × width (or total sq ft), waste percent, and sq ft per box. Read ordered area and box count. This is not a tile piece calculator and not a deck-board count.

How it calculates
order sq ft = area × (1 + 10%); boxes = ceil(order ÷ sq ft per box).

When to use

LVP / laminate / engineered plank shopping list; comparing two SKUs with different box coverage; checking a store quote against your tape.

When not to

Ceramic/porcelain piece counts → tile calculator. Hardwood sold by board-foot for rough stock → board foot calculator. Stairs and landings with weird winders — measure those zones separately.

Assumptions

Waste default 10% (simple rectangle); 12–15% for diagonals, many closets, or busy patterns. Box coverage entered by you from the carton. No underlayment roll math unless you add it as a separate area. Pattern match can force extra boxes beyond waste %.

Worked examples

Example 1

12×15 room = 180 sq ft, waste 10%, box = 20 sq ft
→ order 198 → 10 boxes

Keep one unopened box for future repairs if the dye lot disappears.

Example 2

220 sq ft open plan + hallway, waste 12%, box = 18.6 sq ft
→ order ≈ 246.4 → 14 boxes

Hallways and doorways waste more than the living-room rectangle suggests.

How it calculates

Room area with waste, then boxes from carton coverage.

  1. Enter length × width or total sq ft.
  2. Enter sq ft per box from the carton.
  3. Set waste; read ordered area and boxes.
net sq ft = L × W (sum rooms if needed)
order sq ft = net × (1 + waste%)
boxes = ceil(order sq ft ÷ sq_ft_per_box)

Common traps

  1. Carton coverage wins — “about 20 sq ft” marketing vs printed net coverage differ.
  2. Acclimation and direction do not change area math; they change how many you regret buying short.
  3. Stairs are almost never “just add 10%” — count treads or measure separately.
  4. Your edge is waste + box math on one ticket, not a prettier hero.
